Mooring Pendant

Which size should I need to mooring my boat?

We have received many requests asking about the right line size for mooring boats.

The right rope size depends on a number of factors: strong winds, waves, boat length, tides and quality of the rope.

The following information is intended as a recommendation/guide only, based on the mooring line standards of dbropes (made with 100% 3 strand nylon ropes).

5/8 Mooring Line
The length should be equal to 2 1/2 times the freeboard (the height of a ship's side between the waterline and the deck).

Boats Length Up: 18 ft 3/8" diameter.
Boats Length Up: 24 ft 1/2" diameter.
Boats Length Up: 29 ft 5/8" diameter.
Boats Length Up: 40 ft 3/4" diameter.
Boats Length Up: 55 ft    1" diameter.

  1. I have a catalina 27 located on the coast of Rhode Island. I use a 5/8 inch by 12 feet, three strand mooring nylon line and it holds up my boat very well. I am very interested in this post, as it is very difficult to find the right size line on the internet.
